Welcome to the October 2020 Design Chain Associates E-mail Newsletter!

In addition to DCA's newsletters, keep an eye on DCA's bi-monthly regulatory-focused column in TTI's MarketEYE Resource Center and our new monthly product development-focused column in EE Times!

If you've received this newsletter and are not on the DCA mailing list and would like to be, please sign up.

Six months have passed since my last quarterly/periodic/occasional newsletter and I hope to return to a more frequent cadence, but can't promise that! I hope you have been well and have been staying safe and healthy.

Topics

Can't we just SCIP this?

As the deadline for data entry into the ECHA SCIP database approaches, a last-ditch effort by industry to delay it has apparently failed. Note that SCIP is not retroactive; you only have to enter data for products placed on the market in the EU/EEA as of 5 Jan 2021 and later.

Attend the Chemical Watch Electronics USA Virtual Conference

I will chair the first day of Chemical Watch's Chemicals Management for Electronics USA 2020. This will be two days of information, insight and interaction coming up on November 12 & 13. Check it out and sign up!

TTI MarketEYE and EE Times Columns

While my newsletters have taken a back seat lately, I continue to regularly publish two columns:

My TTI MarketEYE column focuses on regulatory and environmental details and insights.

My EE Times column focuses on improving how we bring human health and environment concepts and constraints into product design. I'm currently focusing on design for circularity but will soon get more specific.

Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions for content you'd like to see in either column.

Save the date: 2021 Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference

Scheduled for June 14-16 (optimistically) in Reston, VA (or virtually, which is my bet) the 25th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference should be very exciting! With a focus on "Sustainable Production to Advance the Circular Economy" I expect to see lots of insightful presentations. If you have an idea for a presentation please let me know regardless of whether it's in the semiconductor/electronics space; the call for presentations is still at least a month or so away.

DCA Articles & DCA In The News

Catch-up on past DCA newsletters on our DCA In The News web page!

October 19, 2020 EE Times: Is the Biological Nutrient Cycle Possible for Electronics?. An example of a biologically-based material with electron transport functionality demonstrates that there are always other ways to approach a technology challenge.

October 15, 2020 TTI MarketEYE: EU & U.S. Updates: No SCIP Reporting Delay, Lead as an SVHC - and More. Lead in glass or ceramic can be an SVHC, and fluorinated flame retardants in polycarbonates are halogenated.

September 14, 2020 EE Times: Designing for Circularity: Hard Disk Drives. REEs and HDDs - circularizing what we destroy.

August 14, 2020 EE Times: Designing for Circularity. The next step in circularizing products is to really understand what it means and what prevents circularity.

August 11, 2020 TTI MarketEYE: REACH Declarations, Packaging Materials and Endangered Elements. We look at what REACH CofCs should contain, the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse's call for comments on new substance restrictions, and the American Chemical Society's alarms on endangered elements.

July 17, 2020 EE Times: From Linear to Circular Product Cycle. The first step in circularizing: realizing that we are making decisions without considering circularity and the challenges that brings.

June 26, 2020 TTI MarketEYE: RoHS Updates: Writing Better Declarations; A New Harmonized Standard. I continue my quixotic mission to improve the electronics industry's understanding of what they think they understand so well: RoHS. Or, "why engineers shouldn't compete with word nerds".

June 16, 2020 EE Times: The Electronics Industry Response to Environmental Regulations: Is it Enough?. I look at where the electronics industry is in relation to the demand for improved product environmental and human health safety performance. While there are spots of brilliance, the landscape could be improved.

May 12, 2020 EE Times: Why the Electronics Industry is Being Regulated. EE Times has published my second column, as I make my way along the path of describing what it will take to embed circularity into the electronics industry (and, perhaps, other manufacturing industries).

May 1, 2020 EE Times: EETimes On Air. Brian Santo, EE Times Editor in Chief, interviews me about electronics, environmental regulations and circularity. My segment starts at 17:18, though the rest of the episode is interesting as well.

Events to Attend

Nov. 12-13, 2020: Virtual - Chemicals Management for Electronics USA 2020. Mike chairs Day 1 and gives two talks: one on RoHS-like requirements in North America and Europe outside the EU, and another on getting to a circular product lifecycle process.

June 14-16, 2021: Reston, VA 25th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference. More info soon!

More to come! Stay tuned.
